Choosing the right size bike helmet is crucial for safety and comfort, and measuring your head accurately is the first step in finding the perfect fit. Here's a simple guide on how to measure your head for selecting a bike helmet.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
You will need a soft measuring tape or a piece of string and a ruler. If you are using string, make sure you can measure it with a ruler afterward.
Step 2: Measure Your Head Circumference
To measure your head, start by locating the widest part of your head, which is typically just above your ears and eyebrows. Wrap the measuring tape or string around your head at this point, ensuring it is level and snug but not too tight. Make sure that it sits above your ears and around the forehead. If you are using a string, mark where it meets and then measure that length against a ruler.
Step 3: Compare Your Measurement to Helmet Sizes
Once you have your measurement, refer to the helmet manufacturer's sizing chart. Helmet sizes can vary between brands, but most charts will provide the range of head circumferences that correspond to each helmet size (small, medium, large, etc.). All the helmets we offer have sizes indicated in centimeters.
Step 4: Consider Your Hair and Head Shape
When choosing a helmet size, also consider your hairstyle and head shape. If you have thick hair or wear your hair in a bun, you might need to go up a size for comfort. Additionally, some helmets are designed with specific shapes, catering to round or oval heads. It's a good idea to try on different helmets to find the most comfortable fit.
Step 5: Adjust the Fit
After selecting a helmet size, adjust the fit using the helmet's padding and retention system. The helmet should fit snugly on your head without moving around. The front of the helmet should sit about an inch above your eyebrows, and the straps should form a V-shape beneath your ears. Make sure the chin strap is snug but not uncomfortably tight.
Step 6: Test the Helmet
Finally, when you try on the helmet, shake your head gently. The helmet should stay in place without shifting. If it feels loose or uncomfortable, consider trying a different size or model.
By accurately measuring your head and taking the time to find the right fit, you can ensure that your bike helmet provides the protection and comfort you need while riding. A correctly fitted helmet is essential for your safety, so don't rush this important step !
